I am amazed at the crap that I obtain in my inbox. More amazed by the lack of responsibility taken in the delivery of targeted advertising to me. You lost and you will continue to do the same until you start to focus on your customer and not on the number of emails you send out.

Groupon, you know me, I know you know more about me than most of my close friends. So why would you send me an email for match.com. Really? Take responsibility for your deals and advertisers and deliver targeted ads to your audience.

Yes this is a rant, and I do not like to do that, but in the day and age we are living this email is poor laziness and a missed opportunity.

How you can do better:
- Ask more from your customers. You do not need to go all facebook on your membership, but ask simple questions so you can deliver better ads. You will know the persons status and that can be helpful for ad delivery
- Go creepy on me. – You know my name and my email, search around the web and obtain some details on me and build a profile. Focus ads on what is current to me, if I am talking about a vacation send me camera deals or sun tan lotion promotions.

Those are just 2 things you can do to provide better results for your advertisers and also a better service to the customers.

What is the weather today? That was the first question I asked the new conversational search within chrome. Is the keyboard just holding us back?

With all of the information obtained from previous voice applications not to mention the on-going powerhouse google voice, they have the ability to always improve the product. As a user of google voice, back when it was grand central, I have seen a great improvement in the ability to accurately transcribe the voice messages. Rarely do I listen to a voice mail, mostly working from the translation. This allows to obtain vital information quickly.

The new search is a great step forward to the new phase of the web.

First off, I have been a long time fan of flickr, back in the day. One of the main photo sharing applications, you want to ask what happened? They had a great product and it appears they almost sat back and relaxed, but it is hard to tell. It is great to see the recent changes and also posted to the newly purchased tumblr blog. With the resources available within flickr, the platform provided from tumblr this will be a great step forward. It will be interesting in the age of the other big social networks will a relaunch of flickr be enough to capture more use. Tumblr has been able to show that you can have a very nice, powerful niche service.

A/B testing is a vital way to obtain true feedback from your user community. You should have this involved in your development and deployment process. With the low-cost of deployment you have the ability to try out several different designs with your community and delivery a very useful application. Userfox is going to deploy a tool that will allow for you to test your next email campaign. This will help with your retention rate and provide the ability to rapidly improve your next email distribution.

Below is a conversation from FB about the location of a good hotel. Robert is a very well known, highly respected person in the technology industry. If you want more information on Robert, click here for the wikipedia entry. I have had the pleasure to speak with him at several conferences and always a delight.

The question / comment I have is this…is VC funding going down the wrong direction? If someone like Robert, who is very well involved in the (start-up) web, still looks for human feedback, are the VC funded application feeding the wrong information into those databases? Are the VC’s looking for results that really do not matter to the development of truly monumental applications?

Allow a user to look back over the changes to the profile and traffic within linkedin to look back to items like this spike allowing them to obtain more from the flexibility you provide.
