Advertising needs to get smarter.

I was just emailed an ad for a product that I currently own, what makes it works, is the company that sent me the email, sold me the product.

Advertisers will need to become smarter in the comings months, weeks, days.

With the mind blowing amount of information available to advertisers, they will need to take the step forward to capitalize the advertising message to each and every person. No longer can you blanket a message to an audience and see what sticks/sells.

With all the tools available to the average consumer, these blanket messages will hurt the brand in the next few communications.

I set up a rule in my email, so no longer will i see this type of messages in the future, so now since they basically insulted me with an ad for a product I already had, and they have the ability to know that, future communications are a waste.

We all know that there is no longer brand loyalty, but there was a perfect opportunity to keep me looking for new offers and now that will no longer happen.

Tap into information you already have and customize the advertising message to each person. No longer do you have billboard messages, those days are long gone. Take advantage of the vast amount of information/tools available and get with it!

smarter notifications

As we look to connect with web sites and services from multiple devices, these tools will need to have a smarter notification system. If you aare using a certain service the application will need to see that you might have already been to the web site, being alerted to the updates avaliable. If you use the same service from a smart phone, tablet, etc, there is no need to alert the user again of the updates.

Email – control that beast.

Email for you might be one of those things we love to hate. Depending on your job you might be tied to it all day, but you can control your email and not let it control you. I wanted to share with you just a few things I do to help control my inbox.

  • First, if your email box has messages older than a month, take those and put them into a folder to look at later. If they are that old, another day will not hurt.
  • Do not read email as soon as you walk in the door. It is too easy to get distracted.
  • Plan a meeting with yourself to read email. I set 3 meetings with myself during the day that I make sure I read email. Around 9am, 2pm and 4pm.
  • When I read my email I first scan and place them into the appropriate folder. Done (nothing needed,cc’d) To-do (items that take more than 2 minutes.)
  • Scan the to-do folder and respond to and or complete anything that is under 2 minutes. I set a meeting for anything that takes more than 2 minutes.
  • Use filters. Control cc’d emails and also if you know a to-do item is always needed from a certain person. Set up a rule for that, no need to take a few seconds scanning it and getting you distracted.
  • Do not contribute to the CC/reply to all. I know that people like to be in the “loop” and in some cases it is needed. But really use cc/reply to all with caution. Think first about the people you are emailing.
While just a few simple things, this is what I feel has helped me control my inbox. Also do not try these and or other changes all at once. Try and implement a change one by one, this way you do not feel overwhelmed.  Again, I know that not everyone can do this, but if you can pull one thing from this maybe planning meetings for tasks with yourself and also to read email will help you get this beast under control.
If you have a tip that helps you control your email box, please place a comment below.
PS: When you feel that your head is getting above water with your email, go back to those emails greater than a month old.

delicious – how I have missed you.

delicious was maybe my first bookmarking service and it is great to see the site given a much-needed face lift. In the pre social days delicious was a network similar to twitter, simple and very powerful. Was it the effect of a big company coming in and buying it that hurt the traffic number, maybe, but I am going to be checking it out again.

But is it too late?

Delicious came at a time when you wanted to discover new sites and the search engines did not provide the real information we needed. I would search for topics in delicious and found amazing up-to-date results. It was also a great way to see what is trending.

One of the other reasons i really liked delicious was the central location for all of my bookmarks. You would have several computers to use during the day and connection to your delicious account allowed you to connect to your important sites. Now bookmark syncing is a common feature found in both firefox and chrome.

Delicious still has the discovery tool that will be very helpful.

Great to see the new look, well done guys.

Facebook chat…we could see this coming

Well, in what can only be seen as a response to the recent release of google+ today Facebook planned to launch something awesome.

Video Chat

Today Facebook has released a new tool that would allow you to have a video chat with anyone you are friends with on the service. You can also take a chat session and turn that into a video chat. Since this is built on the already solid structure of Skype there is exceptional video and voice quality.

A few things to say about this new service it is easy and simple to set up. That is going to be key for the adoption of this new service. You do need to download some software, running on Java, but after that smooth sailing.

Over on the skype side of the plate. You can now view your facebook feed in the skype client.

Here are a few other articles on the facebook feedback, enjoy.

a few words on google+

I feel that I need to document a few notes from my experince on google+. I want to pass on some information that I have learned and allow me a location to look back on the evolution of the tool over time and my thoughts on this tool ina  few weeks.

Huddling in a Circle.

From the recent news, huddle and circle have made the biggest noise. While these tools are very simple in concept, they make a dramatic impact on the way you both consume information and how you deliver information.

Circles, the setup.
You place people you interact with into circles. Google starts you off with a few, family, friends, etc. You can than build as many as you want. A person can be in many circles.

Circles to broadcast. When you have sometime to say, post, etc. You can define the group that you want this message broadcast too. Before the soapbox effect of twitter created a lot of noise. You migth want to follow a certain person since they have the same interests as you, but did you really want to hear about the flat tire they obtained on the way to work. The circle people have a lot of control over the message they can deliver. This is one of the minor/simple concepts that sets google+ apart.

Circles to consume. We all consume data and these circles allow you to look into these circles for certain news and trends. This is not a main new feature of google+, you have groups in facebook and lists in twitter, but a nice spin with the new application.

Huddle
A huddle is the ability to have a group chat with a bunch of people, circle people, in one conversation.

Hangout
Another nice new feature in google+. This allows you to have a video chat with up to 10 people, but I have heard people have had more. You have a main video window that changes based on who is talking. You can also all watch the same youtube video and talk about it in real time. You can see collaboration on documents a feature at a later date.

Here are a few very interesting articles on google+

Are you in google+? What do you think?

should you change your password?

as you might have heard…some passwords have been compromised. Are you wondering if your account is on the list? Jump on over too, shouldichangemypassword.com and enter in your email accounts to see if you are ok. I checked and things appear to be ok.

hacking your way to better productivity

We are always looking for way to get more out of the hours we are awake. I recently started to log my daily activities to see how I am spending my time.  This allowed me to group items together and get more out of the day.

Here are a few more items that will help you get more out of your day.

They might need a new testing procedure…

Based on your news rrs feeds you might have heard about the recent Citi hack. While you can read the full article by following the link below, something tells me that storing the account number in the url might not have been the best choice for development.

giving flavors.me another look

recently obtained an email from flavors.me and wanted to jump back into the site to see what they have changed. On thing just right out my about the service, is is very slick when it comes to ease of use. they have that down. They have a little control panel that you can move around the site and you can also edit the page in real time. just click on a block of text and you can make your changes.

for me, i do not know if a site like this is helpful, since i have my own domain.

but if you are looking for a “central” place for people to find out about you, i think it is worth taking a look at flavors.me

The internet is just a fad…

I can still remember the phone call. As a tech support representative at a local ISP, a caller said, do not worry the internet is just a fad.

I wonder if that same caller is looking over these “fad” number.

  • 107 trillion – The number of emails sent on the Internet in 2010. (I wonder how many are cc’s)
  • 255 million – The number of websites as of December 2010.
  • 39.1% – Growth in the number of Apache websites in 2010.(great news)
  • 88.8 million – .COM domain names at the end of 2010.
  • 14% – Increase in Internet users since the previous year.
  • 152 million – The number of blogs on the Internet (as tracked by BlogPulse).

The reach of the net is still small, as we start to invite more internet connected devices into our homes, we are going to see a major shift and connected will be the only way.

A few sites to watch in 2011

Here are a few sites that I have checked out and have recently obtained some media press.

  • klout.com
At first appears to be an “ego” site, but when you enter in your twitter handle and other social networking information, you start to find out how you influence other people.
  • joindiaspora.com
While the hype of this site appears to have dropped a little bit, they are going after the facebook.com niche. Currently in private beta, they are going to work to fit into the gaps created from facebook.com. I signed up for an invite and I suggest you do the same.
  • quora.com
A site that, while has been around for some time, just recently showed up in a lot of twitter feeds. Like others that have come before it like Yahoo Answers, you basically post a question or provide answers to questions from other people. A couple senior level people have showed up to this site and have provided it some great value. Crowd sourced answers, really nice site.
  • foursquare.com
If you are not already on foursquare, I suggest you check it out. Founded by member of the dodgeball team, they have create a location based check in service. When you are out and about, you check in. Why would you check in? Well first off, the people who have come before you can leave messages/tips. Also you can obtain badges, as you spend more time on the road.

Have you found a site that peaks your interest? Let me know.
