go green with that old computer.

Do you have an old computer that you do not use anymore? If you are like me, you might have a few old computers sitting around. I sometimes use these computers as a testing platform, a printer server or for file storage. But if the computer is a few years old, chances are windows is going to light rather slow. So do not rid that computer, go green and reuse!

Enter into the picture…Ubuntu.

About 2 months ago i placed 7.04 ,desktop edition, on the laptop and i was rather impressed. The installation was very smoothly. I can remember the old days of installing unix, with the calculations on the disk space you wanted to use. Ugh! While the installation is not as pretty as an xp install, it is right to the point and installs in about 10 - 15 minutes. Yes that is correct, even on this old laptop with less than a gig of ram and os installed in about 15 minutes.

I recently updated to 7.10 on the laptop, the upgrade went without a hitch. I just placed Ubuntu server on the desktop and I am looking forward to working with LAMP.

Enjoy the free software, and you might be surprised.  Are you wondering about a word processing applications? Do not worry, you will have a free word processing application, spreadsheet app and the ability to create presentations!

One major thing to keep in mind, installing Ubuntu, will remove all of the old files and os. So back up, before you reuse!
